If you are new to your Kune Kune venture, or if you are currently in the research phase, you have probably come to realize their are 2 primary Kune Kune Pig Registries in the U.S.
You may have questions on which to choose to register your future litters with, or should you choose both?
Personally, for our pigs that are register-able, we like to register with both the AKPR and AKKPS. This is primarily to suit the needs of our customers. Some have preference of one vs another, so by registering our pigs with both registries, then your ability to register future offspring with your registry of choice just became easier.
However, there is no need for you to have to use both registries. Many like to use a registry mainly to prove their pigs are pureblooded and to allow others to be able to register future offspring. Each has it's pros and cons, so it is entirely up to you which you think will best fit your program.
AKPR: Lower Costs, but Less Member Input
Pros:
-No charge for litter notifications
-No charge for registering piglets
-No charge for transfer of ownership
Cons:
-As of June 2020 only pigs that are double wattled can be registered with the AKPR
-Decisions are made by leadership with no consent or vote from members
AKKPS: Higher Costs, but Member Owned
Pros:
-This is member owned, meaning no changes to policies can be made without a vote from all members to approve changes
-You can register both unwattled and wattled piglets, this gives you greater flexibility with registering your stock. For example, In the future you may have an unwattled Kune Kune that meets all other breed standards perfectly and produces double wattled offspring each time. You may feel this is a good pig for your breeding stock. You would only be able to register this pig with AKKPS and since this pig can't be registered with AKPR, it's offspring can only be registered with AKKPS.
Cons: (USA Member prices listed)
-Litter Notifications: $20 (Free with AKPR)
-Piglet Registration: $12 per piglet
-Transfer of Ownership: $10 per piglet
Personally, we plan on using the AKKPS as our primary registry going forward in 2020 and dual registering offspring with AKPR. I personally like that AKKPS is more member friendly and won't make changes without consulting members first. However, you may want to reduce your costs and plan on utilizing the AKPR registry for this purpose. Keep in mind you can factor the additional registration costs into the price of your pig. We don't gouge prices for the registration, we just pass along the same cost we paid.
Hopefully the information above has given you some insight into which registry may be best for your program!
